Activity 16: Counting actions and objects
Materials:
Objects around the house
Try It Out:
- Count your child’s actions during daily routines like teeth-brushing and mealtimes. Say, “1, 2, 3 brushes on your teeth!” or “1, 2 bites of cereal” or “1, 2, 3 steps onto the bus!”
- When you see groups of 1, 2 or 3 objects, point to each and count aloud with your child: “1, 2 shoes.” Or, “1, 2, 3 library books in our bag!”
Making the Most of This Activity:
- Try the activity in different locations throughout the day, such as at the grocery store, in the library, and at home.
- Try it at bath time as you count body parts (1 nose, 2 feet, 2 hands).
Reflect:
Is your child able to count to 2 or 3? If not, focus on counting just 1 object. “1 banana.” “1 garbage truck.” Move up to groups of 2 once your child understands the idea of counting 1 object.
