Activity 2: Counting Aloud
Materials:
None
Try It Out:
- Use daily routines as opportunities to help your child learn to count. For example:
- At bedtime: “OK, we’re counting to 3 and then it’s time for bed. Help me count: 1, 2, 3.”
- At bath time: “We will wash your belly 1, 2, 3 times! Ready? 1, 2, 3.”
- While walking up or down the steps: “Let’s count them: 1, 2, 3.”
- When your child can count to 3, help him count to 4, 5, and beyond.
- While waiting for the bus: “I think the bus will be here in 5 seconds. Let’s count: 1, 2, 3, 4 …”
- Getting into the car seat: “Let’s count to see how long it takes for you to get into your car seat. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 … click!”
Making the Most of This Activity:
- Try this activity at different times of the day.
- Make counting fun. Use a silly voice or clap while you count.
Reflect:
Has your child started to imitate your counting language? If not, keep using number words during everyday routines. Over time and with more experience, your child will start to count aloud.
